Shocker: IIT Delhi Student arrested for Rape, Murder
Burns 19-year-old girl for rejecting him.
Police on Sunday revealed that Pushpam Sinha, a 34-year-old PhD student of IIT-Delhi has been arrested for alleged rape and murder of a teenage Naga girl.
The accused reportedly raped the girl, and later burnt her body. The girl, Ramchanphy Hongray from Nagaland, was Sinha's neighbour in a first floor rented apartment at Munirka in South Delhi. She had reportedly rejected his advances; Sinha later strangled her and burnt her body using a gas stove. Hongray's body was discovered on Saturday and Sinha was arrested the following day.
Earlier the poilce dismissed the case as an accidental death due to burning but the postmortem reports revealed that the 19-year-old was raped, strangled to death and then burnt. Sinha, originally from Patna was an Engineering graduate from Allahabad. He had completed his MSc from IISC Bangalore. He was doing PhD in wave mechanics from IIT-Delhi on a monthly scholarship of Rs 14,000.
On being interrogated, Sinha stated that Hongray had been rejecting his proposals from the past few days, and when she was alone on Saturday afternoon, he entered her house and sexually assaulted her. When she attempted to flee he strangled her to death and burnt her body to get rid of the evidence. Sinha will be produced in court today, a murder case has been registered against him at the Vasant Vihar police station.
